1978 Eastbourne F- Navratilova v. Evert
Pardon the time stamp from the old tape. Despite that visual distraction, a match of real historical value for its all-court play and a shift in the Navratilova/Evert rivalry toward a more even W/L dynamic, in a year that ended with different major sources divided as to who was ranked #1 for 1978. Martina took Wimbledon after this match, Chrissie took the US Open, and then beat Martina in the WTA year-end Colgate Championships, as well as their 2 other matches. But this is one of their rivalry's best ever, with Martina winning 6-4 4-6 9-7.

Having met 2 of the last 3 years in the final of the US Open, there was plenty of buzz about this QF match up in 1983 between Chris Evert & Hana Mandlikova. And despite an unimposing scoreline, the match lived up to the hype, played in a stern wind, yet with both players posting an impressive winner ratio. Billie Jean King & the BBC's John Barrett were in the booth for HBO Sports. Footage provi...

Chris had a devastating running forehand. Not usually mentioned as one of her primary weapons, but her anticipation was second only to known. 2:27.

Chris was super aggressive in this match but not in a careless way. She ran Tracy corner to corner and angled her off. Chris never gets credit for how good of an athlete she worked hard to become because of Martina. To me her best match ever because people were starting to wonder if Tracy Austin was going to surpass Chris at the time.

More offcourt drama followed this match. Chris's dad was not present to watch this match and it meant a lot to her to have her dad here to see her win the final. Wonder Woman egged Chris to call her dad again and invite him to fly up for the final. The next day he was in the stands to watch her win her fifth and most emotional U.S. Open title. At the end of the year Chris won most awards from sportswriters as Female Athlete of the Year

When she hit the circuit all the other women had sliced one handed backhands and played serve and volley . Typically theee players came to the net hitting their approaches to opponents backhand . Since most had slice backhand the ball sat up and floated by time ball reached the net so the net rusher stood a better chance of putting the volley away . 3 of the 4 slams were played on grass . Chris ‘s father raised Chris in clay , playing with a wood racket with a tiny sweet spot demanded perfect form in order to get your body and racket face at contact in front of your body . The rackets were heavy demanding an early take back and full follow through . Chris had two handed backhand because racket was to heavy for her when she started at 8 yrs of age . She had Ft Lauderdale heat and humidity to contend with demanding even more concentration . She hit through the ball , flat that went to the target faster with penetration . The other women duo don’t have solid ground strokes to keep up with Chris . She’d drive the ball deep which keit them from playing serve and volley . Chris hardly ever missed. She removed herself as an opponent , she had one opponent and not herself to overcome . Hours and hours of dedicated practice with a father that rarely handed out praise but encouraged her telling her to not show how you feel so your opponent wouldn’t believe they gotcha because if they believe that they play better . Chris was number one in her age group so when she beat court at age 15 after Margaret had won grand slam in 70 it was natural fir her to believe she could win against others at least in clay . She struggled on grass until 74 winning French then winning Wimbledon where she didn’t face court king or goolagjng or Wade who lost early . Court had a baby so she didn’t compete . Chris lost two more mee see riches in 74 but they were to Goolagong at sf 3 setter and 3 setter at AP . She won two slams ,’made final 3 of 4 slams and runner up at Ao . She was 109-6 for the year , has a 56 match win streak that held the record for over a decade before Martina reached 57. Evert played WTT instead of French 76,77,78 when she would’ve won . Open went to clay 75-77. So Chris won 4 straight opens and beat Evinne for W title in 76. It took Martina nwho flourished in first half of the year including W but by open couldn’t sustain her level and Chris took ITF test end number one in 78. Martina was clear number one in 79 and by then Tracy came in string in very year Chris got married . By beginning of 1980 Chris almost retired took 4 months off and came back to best Martina at W after winning French and beat Tracy st open .Shecwas number one for 80,81 winning W in 81. Chris split slams with Martina both winning 2 but Martina best evert in year end championships the number one . 82-86 Marina was number one but Chris was just behind Martina in 82,85 . Graf took over in 87 relegating evert to number 3 . Once Chris knew she couldn’t beat Martina and Graf to win a slam she retired in 89 . Her last pro match that she won was 89 open beating Seles 6-0,6.2 at age 34.5 . Truly a great career that went by so fast and yet it was hard to see it end . Her mental concentration was unmatched and she came back to win against Martina at French 85,86. She could at least say she was number one player in clay . She handled herself with class and grace like no other . Hard to believe she retired 35 yrs ago . I’m 61?so I grew up watching her . I was 11 when I saw her in person at Cincy western losing to Goolagong on clay her last loss for 6 yrs on clay in 73-79 - 125 straight wins on clay lost to Tracy in a 3 rd set tie break then won 64 more in a row before until Hana beat her at 81 French . Synopsis of her career I know but I admire her resolve .

I'm perplexed that Tracy Austin was ever a number 1 player. She cannot move on the court. How did she make it to the top when she couldn't move? If you notice when Chris doesn't hit right to Tracy, she really struggles to get to the ball and ultimately Chris wins the point. I get that Tracy had great ground strokes but geez she's terrible at running around the court. Never seen a number 1 player that couldn't run to the ball
